Obituary for Norman N. Siegel

Norman N. Siegel, 94 of Long Branch passed away Thursday December 1st.

Mr. Siegel was born and raised in New York City, moving to Long Branch in 1949.

He was a competitive swimmer and was awarded scholarships to both Columbia Grammar School and Rutgers College. He was a National AAU Champion. In 1943, he won the National AAU Championship in the 300 yard Individual Medley. Following the attack December 7, 1941 on Pearl Harbor, Mr. Siegel enlisted in the Navy R.O.T.C. program at Rutgers. After graduating, he attended the Midshipman’s School at Notre Dame. Mr. Siegel served as a Lieutenant aboard the USS LST 1034, an invasion ship. During the Pacific Campaign, he participated in several invasions of Japanese held islands. After the Japanese surrender, he served with the Occupation forces in Japan.

Mr. Siegel had a long sales career in the Textile Industry, retiring in1986 from United Merchants & Manufacturers, New York. He was a member of Temple Beth Miriam, Long Branch. Each year Mr. Siegel swam in the Annual Ray Licata Ocean Swim in Long Branch where he won for his age group. At 88 years old, he was recognized as the oldest swimmer. In addition to his love for swimming, he was an avid skier, skiing throughout the United States and Europe.

Surviving is his wife of 67 years Hermine Vogel Siegel; his children Paul & Gina Siegel, Mark Siegel and Gwen & Scott Greenberg; and his grandchildren Jason Siegel, Robbie Greenberg and Anna Greenberg.
